What a tape and drawstring manufacturer makes, and when to use each

The five products here split cleanly in two. Herringbone and grosgrain are flat woven tapes: firm, non-stretch, used where something has to be bound, faced or reinforced and must not distort. Herringbone takes its name from a broken twill that reverses direction along the tape, which makes it lie flat; grosgrain is woven with a heavier weft that raises a crosswise rib and gives it more body, so it holds a shape where it is visible on the outside of the garment.

Drawcord and drawstring are the pull elements. A round braided drawcord suits a small eyelet or a visible hood tie; a flat drawstring spreads its load across a wider face, so it holds a knot better and is less inclined to cut into fabric when pulled tight — the usual choice for shorts, joggers and waistbands. We run a dedicated plastic tipping machine, so cords and strings can arrive cut to length and tipped rather than as bulk your line has to finish.

Gum tape sits apart from both: it is made against your application rather than to a standing construction, which is why it is the one product in this category with no published capacity figure.
